Turtle Candies Ingredients

These turtles candies are so fun and easy to make! You’ll want to whip up a batch anytime you need a little gift for someone or just need a fun little treat. They are a classic candy that always makes me think of a sweet shop at a theme park or seaside boardwalk.

The whole recipe comes together quickly from start to finish. It probably will take longer to preheat the oven. Because the majority of this recipe is pretty simple, it could be a fun one to do with kids. However, the taking them out of the oven and pressing down the caramels can be a little tricky and has a good possibility of being burned so you’ll definitely want an adult helping with that. But putting down the pecans, placing the caramels and swirling the chocolate on top are all great things for little hands to help with.

These are a classic candy so there is really no reason to mess with what works. You could make your own caramel of course and variations on the chocolate you use could be fun, but I wouldn’t deviate much more than that. Why mess with perfection? Give these Turtle candies a try and you’ll see what I mean. If you do, let me know what you think in the comments or share a picture with me on Instagram (@bdhbakes).

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325º
  • Place pecan halves

Place the pecan halves in groups of three of four on a greased cookie sheet. Alternatively you can use parchment paper or a baking mat instead of greasing the sheet.

  • Place Caramel on Top of Pecans

Unwrap each caramel and place on top of the center of the group of pecans.

  • Bake for 4-8 Minutes

Once the oven is preheated, bake the tray in the oven for 4 to 8 minutes. I'd err on the side of longer just to make sure the caramel is really soft.

  • Press Down Caramel

Immediately after the caramels are out of the oven, take a rubber spatula and lightly coat it with butter or cooking spray and gently press down on each caramel forcing it to melt over the pecans. Allow to cool for 5 minutes or so.

  • Melt Chocolate Chips

Put your chocolate chips in a small bowl. Heat in the microwave in 10 second increments stirring well in between each burst of heat until the chocolate is just melted. Focus more on the stirring to melt the chocolate than the microwave - do not overheat. It should only take 3 or 4 times in the microwave to melt well.

  • Swirl Chocolate on Top of Caramels

Add about a teaspoon or so of melted chocolate on top of the melted caramels so that it just covers it and pours over the sides.

  • Cool

Cool until all ingredients have reached room temperature. About an hour or more.
